John Lennon's 1958 Rickenbacker 325 Capri. Purchased in Hamburg in 1960 it was finished in natural wood with a gold pick guard and used a Kauffman Vibrola tailpiece. Used exclusively for the next four years in studio recordings and live shows, this is the guitar John was playing when The Beatles made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Following the groupÕs second visit to Hamburg in 1961, this 325 underwent major changes when John had a Bigsby vibrato and bow tie bridge fitted. By 1962 Brian Epstein was improving the groupÕs stage appearance and had them change to matching suits, matching amps and eventually matching black guitars and with this in mind John had his 325 painted gloss black and completed the change with a set of Hofner control knobs. The first public performance in black was on October 12th 1962 at The Tower Ballroom in New Brighton. Size 841mm x 594mm (33.1" x 23.4")
